In each deal of poker, there are one or more betting rounds. With
Draw Poker, a usual prerequisite to bet is a hand of jacks or
better. This may, however, be waived by the dealer, being
called "guts", or all that is required to open. In Stud Poker,
the first to bet is the highest card showing, or first dealt if
there are more than one. Betting then begins with the player
to the left of the dealer. After one player bets, the next
player may match the bet, "call," or raise. When a player
chooses not to bet or bet and raise, that player chooses to drop
out, or "fold." House rules may determine the size of bets and
raises as well as the number of raises. When all allowable
bets and raises have been made by players still in the game, each
player calls his hand beginning with the player whose last bet has
been matched. The highest hand then wins. In serious
games, a player who miscalls his hand (for example, calling a flush
when actually holding a straight flush) is held to that call.
In more casual games, the holder of the actual high hand may win.
Refer to house rules in this situation.
